 Newbery Medal

Named after John Newbery, an eighteenth-century English bookseller, the Newbery Award is awarded annually to teh author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in the United States during the proceeding year.  Honor books may be named as well.

Caldecott Medal

The Caldecott Medal is awarded to the artist of the most distinguished picture book in the United States during the proceeding year.  Although only one book receives the award, honor books may also be named.
