Things are changing at the library, as many patrons already know. Since eBooks and eAudioBooks have made their way into the library catalog, many patrons are turning to the Information Desk for assistance with their electronic devices. From the tiny screens of smartphones on up to laptops, we do our best to guide patrons through the process of downloading, installing, and using the correct apps and programs to read or listen to electronic books.

We love offering one-on-one assistance when we can, but oftentimes it’s difficult to devote the amount of time needed to fully assist a patron, which can be frustrating for both parties. Here are a few other ways patrons can get assistance with their electronic devices:

“Getting to Know Your eReader” is a workshop that is part of our Beginning eReader Series. On Tuesday July 16th, we’re welcoming patrons to attend in order to learn about their eReaders and tablets. If you own an iPad, iPad Mini, or iPhone, please attend from 1:00-2:30. All other electronic devices, including Kindles, should be brought from 2:45-4:30pm. Please call ahead to reserve a spot and to have any questions answered: 715-232-2164 ext 10.

“App-apalooza” is the final workshop in our Beginning eReader Series. On Friday July 19th from 10:00am to 12:00pm, patrons are welcome to attend a presentation all about apps. We will discuss what exactly “apps” are, which apps are the most popular and useful, and we’ll be happy to answer any questions. Please call ahead to reserve a spot: 715-232-2164 ext 10.

Throughout July, Menomonie Public Library is offering a weekly Hands-On Computer Lab. From 1:00-3:00pm on Tuesdays July 2nd and 16th and from 5:00-7:00pm on Mondays July 8th and 22nd, patrons can come in for one-on-one assistance with a volunteer technology expert. We encourage patrons to bring their own devices if possible, but we welcome the use of our computers, too. July is the last month for the Hands-On Computer Lab until further notice, so take advantage of this great opportunity while it’s still available!

Finally, there are many excellent online guides for getting help with your smartphone, eReader, or tablet. Check out the Menomonie Public Library website (under the “Downloads” tab) to access some of these guides, or do a Google search. As always, feel free to stop by the Information Desk for assistance and we’ll do our best to help.
