martin house

Thanks to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife Technician Chad Mogen, the library now has a Purple Martin apartment.  Being right on the bank of Lake Menomin the library is in a perfect spot to attract Martins.  Now that we have a house, we are learning about Martins. Purple Martins are the largest member of the swallow family in North America.   Martins spend the non-breeding season in Brazil then migrate to North America to nest. East of the Rockies they are totally dependent on human-supplied housing.  Martins eat only flying insects, which they catch in flight. Their diet is diverse, including dragonflies, damselflies, flies, midges, mayflies, stinkbugs, leafhoppers, Japanese beetles, June bugs, butterflies, moths, grasshoppers, cicadas, bees, wasps, flying ants, and ballooning spiders. Martins are not, however, prodigious consumers of mosquitoes as is so often claimed.  It is not always easy to get your first Martins and you must be diligent about keeping the house clean and not allow other birds to take it over before your Martin colony is established.  It appears we have just acquired a new and interesting hobby.  Data about Purple Martins courtesy of the Purple Martin Conservation Association

Menomonie Public Library will be implementing an ongoing early literacy initiative called 1000 Books Before Kindergarten.  We plan on kicking off this program on May 14, 2013.  This multiyear project will be used to encourage parents to read aloud at least 1000 books with their children age birth up to before they enter school.  The program is open to any preschooler in Menomonie and surrounding communities.  According to the US Census Bureau, Menomonie’s population has 651 children under the age of 5.  Our initial goal for the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is to reach and involve 200 (or more!) of these children over a two year period.

Views of Lake Menomin

April 24 | 7:00 p.m.

The author of 97 views of Lake Menomin invites you to attend this reading. This reading will be a verbal/visual anecdotal story of the U.W.-Stout Art Department, it’s beginnings in 1964 and Mr. Schulman’s beginnings in 1966 as an Artist and developing Art Educator. It also records the author wrestling with verbal and visual relationships that eventually climb into poetry. The poetry included will help describe his artistic philosophy.
